Aesthetic Treatments for Every Decade: What to Consider in Your 20s, 30s, 40s, and Beyond

Aging is a beautiful, natural process. And let’s be serious, it’s a privilege to age! But that doesn’t mean we can’t take steps to look and feel our best at every stage of life. Whether you’re in your 20s and just beginning to explore preventative care or in your 40s and focusing on rejuvenation, aesthetic treatments can help you achieve glowing, youthful skin. Here’s a decade-by-decade guide to understanding which treatments are best suited for your needs.

In Your 20s: Laying the Foundation with Preventative Care

Your 20s are all about prevention. At this age, your skin is still youthful and elastic, but the choices you make now can impact how your skin ages in the future.

Key Concerns in Your 20s:

  • Early signs of fine lines (especially around the eyes and forehead)
  • Sun damage and hyperpigmentation
  • Acne scars or uneven skin tone

Recommended Treatments:

  1. Botox® or Dysport (or “Baby Tox”): Small doses of Botox or Dysport can help prevent fine lines from becoming static wrinkles later on. This can be especially important for patients who have genetically strong muscles.
  2. Chemical Peels: Light to medium peels can improve skin texture, tone, and address acne scars. I love the Vi Peel for general maintenance or the Cosmelan peel for melasma.
  3. Microneedling: Stimulates collagen production and addresses early signs of aging or scarring. This is an incredible treatment for any skin type. I make sure to do my microneedling every 6 months.
  4. Medical-Grade Skincare: Incorporate SPF, antioxidants, and retinol to protect and repair your skin. Everyone needs at least these top three in their routine. My faves? SPF – Alastin’s Hydratint. Retinoid – AlphaRet by SkinBetter. And Antioxidant – Either Alastin’s C-Radical Defense or SkinBetter’s Alto.

In Your 30s: Addressing Early Signs of Aging

Your 30s are when collagen production begins to slow down, and you might notice fine lines, volume loss, or changes in skin texture. Things start to travel downward. It’s the perfect time to blend preventative and corrective care.

Key Concerns in Your 30s:

  • Fine lines becoming deeper wrinkles
  • Mild loss of facial volume, especially around the under-eyes and cheeks
  • Uneven skin tone or dullness

Recommended Treatments:

  1. Dermal Fillers: Restore lost volume in the cheeks, lips, temples, jawline, chin or under-eye area. This can be done in a very natural way.
  2. Botox® or Dysport®: Continue wrinkle prevention and softening. You’ll want to schedule your appointments about 3-4 months apart.
  3. Hydrafacial® or Medical Facials: Deep clean pores and maintain a radiant complexion.
  4. Laser Resurfacing: Address pigmentation and improve skin tone. This is the time in life to think about lighter skin resurfacing more often.
  5. Biostimulators (like Sculptra®): Boost collagen production for long-term results. This is the perfect time to start your collagen-building journey. By 35 years old, we’re making as much collagen as we’re losing. By treating with biostimulators like Sculptra, we can bank more for the future.

In Your 40s: Rejuvenation and Restoration

By the time you reach your 40s, signs of aging become more noticeable. Fine lines deepen, skin elasticity decreases, and volume loss becomes more apparent. This is the time to focus on rejuvenation and skin tightening.

Key Concerns in Your 40s:

  • Deeper wrinkles, especially around the mouth and eyes
  • Sagging skin along the jawline or neck
  • Volume loss in the mid-face

Recommended Treatments:

  1. Sculptra®: Biostimulators to rebuild collagen and restore facial structure and skin quality.
  2. RF Microneedling and/or Light CO2 Resurfacing: Tighten skin and improve laxity with non-invasive options. These treatments have very little downtime and have long-lasting results.
  3. Customized Injectable Treatments: Combine Botox, Dysport and fillers for comprehensive rejuvenation. We might need to talk more about full facial balancing to restore volume and help what happens with age and time.

In Your 50s and Beyond: Comprehensive Rejuvenation

Your 50s and beyond are about embracing the wisdom and beauty that come with age while addressing more advanced signs of aging. At this stage, treatments become more focused on lifting, tightening, and volumizing.

Key Concerns in Your 50s:

  • Significant volume loss in the cheeks, temples, and jawline
  • Deep wrinkles and folds
  • Skin laxity on the face, neck, and décolletage

Recommended Treatments:

  1. Full-Face Injectable Rejuvenation: Strategic use of dermal fillers and Dysport or Botox for a natural, youthful appearance.
  2. CO2 Laser Resurfacing: Dramatically improves wrinkles, texture, and pigmentation.
  3. Sculptra® for the Body: Tighten and firm areas like the arms or décolletage.
  4. Comprehensive Skin Care Routine: Invest in anti-aging skincare products with growth factors and peptides. My favorite products here are things like Alastin’s Restorative Skin Complex or SkinBetter’s Face & Neck.
